Welcome to Lexington S.C.
The town of Lexington is located off I-26, I-20 and Highway 378. Lexington has been growing at a rapid rate over the years. It was found by Spanish explorers and chartered by German settlers in 1785. The Town of Lexington formed around the courthouse and was actually called "Lexington Court House" until 1900. The original settlers of Lexington were mostly German. You may have seen that most of Chapin´s and Irmo´s founders were German as well. On January 24, 1820 the town started with the purchase of two acres of land from Anna Barbara Drafts Corley (Granny Corley) to build a new court house and jail for Lexington County. You can find all kinds of interesting history in the Lexington County Museum about the 18th and 19th century. If you are interested in the history you can find historic structures in the downtown area of Lexington. To learn a little more go to http://www.lexingtonsc.org/history_of_lexington.html
You can also visit the Lake Murray Visitors Center (www.lakemurrayjewel.com) on Highway 6 near the Dam on the Irmo side of the lake for details and the Lake history as well. Cayce (in Lexington County) has also a historical museum worth visiting, and so has the city of Columbia, the McKissick Museum. Columbia and surrounding communities are rich with history, so is all of South Carolina.
Lexington is among the fastest growing communities in South Carolina. You can find homes from the 100's into millions here. Some of the newer developments feature sidewalks, community pools, tennis court and other recreation. There are all brick communities in the 300's to 500's. Lexington has outstanding schools. Becasue the weather is to nice in South Carolina you will find a lot of outdoor recreation, year-round. http://www.LexingtonSC.org
Lexington Counties quick facts from their website and US Census bureau are that Lexington county has approximately 248,519 people. That is an estimate. April 2000 it was 216,010.

Lexington County is very large and there is still land for sale. You will see while driving around and exploring that there are a fair share of manufactured homes found here on larger lots. If you find dirt roads on the way, they will remain that way. For the most part you see nice communities and nice homes with very good schools. Home on the lake or lake access communities are pricier of course and very nice. www.lex-co.com
Lexington has a town center. There is a newer court house downtown. Businesses are growing along Hwy 378. Stores like Target and Kohl´s can be found here, as well as specialty stores, restaurants and a super Walmart. Another was opened 2009 along Hwy 6 and Platt Springs Road near White Knoll High School along with many other stores. Highway 6 is stil in process of being widened here and you may experience traffic delays.
Gibson Pond Park was opened 2007 for nature lovers. It features a 40 acre pond with a dock for canoes and kayaks. There are soccer activities here at the Gibson Road Sports Complex year-round. There is a beach at the dam open to the public and you need to either purchase a season sticker for the car or pay entrance fee every time you like to enjoy it. There is a walking path and bicycle path along Highway 6 going across the dam into Irmo.
Lake Murray was named after William S. Murray, a former justice of the Supreme Court and was started back in 1927. There is the Lake Murray park by the dam open from 11am to 8pm during the summer. There are also plenty marinas around where you can drop a boat into the water to enjoy the lake. It offers good fishing (brim, crappie, largemouth bass, and striped bass), boating, swimming and nature watching.
One of the very popular events is bird watching. Doolittle Island is in the middle of the lake and was North America's first designated Purple Martin sanctuary. It is a spectacular experience to be sitting in your boat and watch the sun set and the Purple Martins on a warm summer evening here. Many bird watchers drop anchor and watch over a million of birds in the summer right here. Purple Martins are beautiful swallows.
Nature lover? If you keep your eyes open you may see a bald eagle, blue heron, egret and much more. It is a nature lover's paradise to be on the lake and surrounding Lexington and Columbia areas.
